Coach Spotlight - Mihai Sandu

Introducing the first coach spotlight of the 2024/25 season: Mihai Sandu

Mihai is the driving force behind IANNIS Football Club, where his unwavering dedication is evident. With a mission to grow the club and deepen its ties with local communities, currently spanning over 12 areas, Mihai goes beyond the pitch. His commitment extends to supporting players and their families with free sandwiches, hot drinks during the winter, and healthy snacks, all made possible by generous sponsors within the Romanian community.

As the club's founder, chairperson, welfare officer, and U10 coach, Mihai coordinates a team of local volunteers and qualified coaches to manage over seven youth teams and two adult teams, catering to more than 170 registered players. Based in Braunstone Park, IANNIS also maintains a strong partnership with The Grove Community Hub.

Mihai's passion for developing young talent is further highlighted through his work with Leicester Nirvana. He is actively involved in the "Leicester Nirvana IANNIS" project, where he manages both the Leicester Nirvana Reserves and the U18 teams, focusing on nurturing the next generation of football stars in Leicestershire.

How did you get into coaching and how long have you been coaching for?

Back in Romania, my home country, I was a football player, but unfortunately, I suffered a bad injury that kept me away from football for two and a half years. I started to coach in 2016 after the loss of my son. I made the team in his name, "IANNIS Football Club" as a way to combine my love for football and to keep his memory alive for years to come.

How do you measure success with your team?

Measuring success with a football team involves a multifaceted approach. Firstly, the most straightforward metric is the number of wins, losses, and draws, as these directly impact the team's standings in leagues and tournaments. Goals scored and goals conceded are crucial statistics that reflect offensive and defensive effectiveness.

Additionally, player development is vital; success can be gauged by players improving their skills, earning individual accolades, or progressing to higher levels of play. Team cohesion and chemistry also play significant roles, as a unified team tends to perform better on the pitch.

Fan engagement and support can also indicate success, as a loyal fanbase enhances team morale and creates a vibrant match-day atmosphere. Lastly, the team's ability to adapt to challenges, maintain a positive culture, and foster a competitive spirit are essential elements that contribute to long-term success both on and off the field.

What Coaching certificates/qualifications do you have?

I’m currently qualified UEFA C coach and will be trying to become a UEFA B level coach.

Have the skills that you have learned in coaching helped outside of football?

Yes, the skills learned in coaching can be highly beneficial outside of football. Leadership, communication, and motivational techniques are transferable to various settings, such as the workplace or community organizstions.

Coaching fosters teamwork and collaboration, which are essential in any group dynamic. The ability to analyze performance and provide constructive feedback can enhance personal and professional relationships. Additionally, problem-solving skills developed through strategizing for games can be applied to tackle challenges in everyday life.

Overall, the principles of discipline, resilience, and goal-setting gained from coaching contribute to success in numerous aspects beyond football.

What is the most rewarding part of being a coach?

The most rewarding part of being a coach is witnessing the growth and development of players, both on and off the field. Seeing them improve their skills, gain confidence, and achieve their goals brings immense satisfaction. Building strong relationships with players and fostering a sense of teamwork and camaraderie also create a fulfilling environment.

Additionally, being able to instill values such as discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship in young athletes is incredibly gratifying. Celebrating their successes, whether big or small, and knowing that you played a part in their journey makes coaching a profoundly rewarding experience.
